And‘be commanded them, faying, this is the thing that ye foall do, &c.\) Thefe were the rulers over hundreds among the priefts and Levites, and which he, as high-prieft, could command, and — whom he could convene without fufpicion, being fuch as he had a connexion with, and were unarmed men: and for the better underftanding of what follows, it fhould be obferved, that the priefts in the times of David, were divided into 24 courfes, which were by turns to ferve a week in the temple; the courfe that came in, entered when the fabbath began, and that which went out, went out when it ended, and each courfe confifted of 1000 men: now with refpect to both thefe courfes, both that which went in, and that which went out, Feboiada eave them the following charge: a third part of you that enter in on the fabbath; on the beginning of it, to do duty in the temple the week following:
were more beds than one; one of the chambers of | hall even be keepers of the watch of the king’s houfe 5 the priefts and Levites in the temple, that is, which were adjoining to it; for into the fanctuary itfelf it was not ufual to bring beds*; wherefore the houfe of the Lord, in the next verfe, muft be underftood largely, as including all the appendages of it.

And be was with ber hid in the houfe of the Lord fix years, &c.] In the temple; not in the holy of holies, as Farchi, but in a chamber of the priefts and Levites, of which there were feveral in the temple, as Kimchi, and others; and the huf- which, according to fome, was that part of the temple where the king was hid and brought up, fuppofed to be the north part of it: or rather thefe were fet at the north gate of the temple, which led to the royal palace, left any fhould ruth out of that, and kill the king.. herr, “a

And a third part thall be at the gate of Sur, &c.] Generally thought by the Fews to be - the eaftern gate, fo called, as they fay, becaufe fuch as were defiled were bid to depart, or go band otf Febofbeba being high-prieft, had one of back, as this word fignifies, and not enter the tem- them for his own ufe; and here the child was hid fix years, fo that he was but a year old when he was firft taken and preferved, for he was made king when feven years of, age, ¥. 21. and Athaliab did reign over the land; the only inftance we hear of a woman reigning in J/rae/, and this was not by right, but by ufurpation; and fo, according to the Fewi b canons, a woman might not rule; which thus runs *, they don’t fet a woman in the kingdom, as it is faid, Deut. xvii. 15. a king over them, not a queen; and fo in all places of power and authority in //- rael, they put in them none but a man.
y.4. And the feventh yedr Feboiada fent and fet the rulers over hundreds with the captains, and the guard, &c.] This was the hufband of Febofbeba, who was high-prieft, 2 Chron. xxii. 11. thefe rulers over. hundreds were not thofe appointed over the people for civil affairs, as by the advice of Fethro, but over the priefts and Levites in their courfés; - five of whom are mentioned by name, and were employed in gathering together the Levifes, and the chief of the fathers, throughout all the cities of Fudab, 2 Chron. xxiii.1,2. and’ the captains here are the heads of the fathers there, who were the in their room, ‘unlefs rather the temple-guard is meant; and brought them to him into the boufe of fervice, the other to keep tlie atct houfe, and the other third at the g ple; itis called she gate of the foundation, 2 Chron. xxiii. 5. becaufe, according to Bes Gerfom, here the foundation of the fanctuary was firft laid; ‘it is faid * to have five other names befides thefe: wad a third part at the gate bebind the guard; the templeguard, which had a captain of them, A&s. iy. 1. this gate is fuppofed to be the fame with Sippim, or the threfhold-gate, 2 Chron. xxiii, 4. and to be the fouthern one: fo fhall ye keep the watch of the houfe that it be not broken down, guard the temple, that none break or ruth into it, of Atbaliah’s party. y¥. 7. And two parts of all you that go forth on the fabbath, &c.] The courfe that went out of fervice at the end of the fabbath; thefe were not faffered, not any of them, to go into the country, but were detained for the prefent purpofe, and divided into two parts: even they hall keep the watch of the houfe of the Lord. about rhe king thefe were laced in the temple where the king was, or where he fhould be brought forth, and be a guard on his right and left; this interpretation feems to be agreeable to the order of the text here, and is the f of Yarchi; but there is this objection to it, the courfe that went out, one third of them was placed at the gate behind the guard, and the other two to keep the watch of the houfe for the king’s fafety 5 and they clapt their bands in token of joy: and faid, God fave the king; or, let the king live; or, may he profper, as the Targum; may health and
-|profperity attend him in his government. In there were but three ranks or or rs of them in all; |2 Coron. xxiii. 11. wherefore the fenfe of Kimchi, Ben Gerfom, and Abarbinel feems moft agreeable, that the firft confifted of thofe that went in on the fabbath, not of all, but half of them, the other half being employed in the fervice of the fanétuary; and the other two of the courfe that went out, even all of them, they being entirely at leifure, who were divided into two parts, and difpofed of as above.
"y. 11. And the guard flood every man with his weapons in bis hand, round about the king, &c.) As ordered, ¥.8. from the right corner of the temple, to the left corner of the temple, from the northeaft to the fouth-eaft: along by the altar and the temple; the altar of burnt-otfering, which ftood in it is faid, Feboiada and bis fons anointed him, and faid thofe words; among whom muft be Zechariah, whom. this king afterwards flew, which was an’ inftance of great ingratitude, 2 Chron. xxiv. 20, 21, 22.

And when Athaliab beard the noife of the gward, and of the people, &c.] Their acclamations and fhouts at the coronation of the king; for by this time the people had got fome knowledge of the affair, and ran, and came flocking to fee the new king, and exprefs their joy on this occafion, and whom they greatly praifed, 2 Chron. xxiii. 12. /he came to the people into the temple of the Lord; the outward court, where the people were affembled; and the feems to come alone, unattended, it great furprize and confternation, and was admitted to pals the guards, being the queen, and alone, and perhaps by the particular order of ¥ehoiada, tho’ contrary to the general orders he gave, y. 8.

Out of the apartment in the temple, where he had been brought up: amd put the crown upon im the crown-royal, which feems to have been kept in the temple: and gave him the teffimony; the book of the law, which he was to ‘read in all his days, and according to it govern the people; and which was a teftimony of the will of God both to him.and them: Kimchi and Ben Melech interpret it of royal garments put upon him: and they made bim king, and anointed him, by proclaimed and declared him king, and anointed him for the confirmation of it, becaufe of the pretenfion Atbaliab made to the kingdom; otherwife, as the Fewifh writers fay, the fon of a king was not ‘anointed; and hence, they fay, it was, that Solo- "mon was anointed, becaufe of the claim of Adonijab: | take her part, and feize on the new king, and thofe that fet him up.

But Feboiada the prieft commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the boft, &c.]} Of the priefts and levites: and [aid unto them, Have her forth without the ranges; the ranks of the guards, which were at the gate leading to the palace, or rather within them *; the meaning is, that he ordered her to be had out of the court of the temple, and be put within their ranks, and inclofed them, that her blood might not be thed in the temple, and yet not efcape them; and him that fol- /oweth ber, kill with the fword; that takes her part,. and offers to help and affift her, pafling through the ranks after her, difpatch him at once; for the prieft bad faid, Let ber not be flain in the house of the Lord that it might not be defiled with her lad 756: ‘blood; by which it appears that the guards had orders concerning her before, fhould fhe come to the temple, fee ¥. 13.

And they laid hands on ber, &c.] Or rather, “‘ fet a place for her,” as the Targum, fo Yarchi and Kimchi, made a fpace, opened a way for her to come out of the temple into their ranks, that fhe might be there taken and flain, and not in the temple: and fhe went by the way by the which the borfes came into tbe king’s boufe, either the high road in which the horfes and carriages went to the palace, or the way to the king’s ftables near the palace: and there was foe flain, they let her go fo far, which was far enough from the temple, and then they flew her.
yt. 17. And Feboiada made a covenant between the Lord, and the king and the people, that they fhould be the Lora’s people, &c.] Renewed the covenant between the Lord on the one part, and the king and'the people on the other; affuring them, that as God had declared that he would be their God, he would yet be their God to blefs and protect them, they continuing in obedience to him; and obliging them to promife that they would ferve the Lord their God, and him only, and root out all idolatry. from the land, and reftore, and continue in, the pure worlhip of God: between the king alfo and the people; he promifing, on his part, that he would govern them according to the law of God, and protect them in their rights and properties, privileges and liberties; and they, on their part, that they would honour and obey him, and be his faithful fubjects. In 2 Chron. xxiii. 16. Febsiada is faid to make this covenant between him, &e, which may be underftood of the Lord; or if of himfelf, the meaning is, that it was made between him, the king and people, and the Lord.

And all the people of the land, &c.] ‘That were at Ferufalem, and the parts adjacent, that came from the country, hearing what was done: qent into the houfe.of Baal; a temple of his dthaliah had built, either in Zerufalem, or near it; perhaps on the mount of Olives, called the mount of corruption, ch. xxiil. 13. from the idolatry there committed: and brake it down, bis altars and his images brake they in pieces thoroughly; made an en- i this chapter fome account is given. of the reign of ‘eboafh, that it was long, and the beginning of it good, during the life of Feboiada, ¥. 1—3. how. urgent he was to, have the temple repaired, and what methods were taken for that purpofe, ¥.4—16. how meanly, as well as impioufly he behaved, when the king of Syria was about to come up to Ferujalem and befiege it, y. 17, 18, and the chapter is clofed with an account of his death, and the manner_of it, y. ig—2I.

In the feventh year of Febu, Fehoafb beganto reign, &c.] So that he reigned 21 or 22: years cotemporary with Febu’s reign, for Febu reigned 28 years: and 40 years reigned he in Ferufalem; the fame number of years David and Solomon reigned: and bis mother’s name was Zibiah of Beerfbeba, a city in the tribe of Simeon, in the extreme part of the land of Canaan fouthward; her name in tire deftruétion of them all, temple, altars, the images of Baal and other deities: and flew Matian the prieft of Baal before the altar; either ashe was facrificing, or that he might be a facrifice, of —; where he had fled. for refuge: and the prief ap. pointed officers over the boufe of the Lord; p to offer facrifices, Levites to fing the praifes of God, porters at the door of the temple, and watches in it, and reftored the courfes of the priefts, and every thing to its proper order, which had been neglected, or had ceafed during the ufurpation of Athaliab, fee 2 Chron, xxiii. 18, 19.; ¥. 19. Let the priefis take it to them, every man his acquaintance, &c.] Of thofe that were moft known by them; for the priefts had cities them in feveral parts of the land, and they that dwelt with them in them, or in the parts adjacent to them, were beft known by them; and they were fent into all the cities, fome to one and fome to another, where they were moft acquainted, to coltect money, both what was due by law, and what the people fhould freely give, fee 2 Chron. xxiv. 5. ana let them repair the breaches of the houfe, wherefoever any breach fhall be found, thatis, of thetemple, which, according to the Fewifh chronology *, had been built but 155 years; and being built very ftrong, would have needed no confiderable repairs as yet, but that it had been broken up and milufed by Athaliah and her fons, 2 Chron, xxiv. 7. y¥. 6. And Feboafh faid to the prieis, &c.] Being minded, or having it in his heart to repair the temple, as in 2 Chron. xxiv. 4. not only -becaufe it was the fanctuary of the Lord, though that chiefly, but becaufe it had been a fanctuary to him, where he was hid and preferved fix years: al/ the money of the dedicated things that is brought into the houfe of she Lord; or rather, that is to be brought, as De Dieu and others render it, the particulars of which follow: even the money of every one that paffeth the account; of that pafleth among them that are numbered, as in Exod. xxx. 13, 14. that were upwards of twenty years of age, and bound to pay the half fhekel for the ranfom of-their fouls; and it is called the colleétion or burden Mo/es laidon them in the wildernefs, 2 Chron. xxiv. 6. 9. the money that every man is fet at; the price the prieft fet upon or eftimated a man at, or whomfoever belonged to him, that he devoted to the Lord, which by the law he was bound to pay for his redemption, and till that was done, he and they were not his, but the Lord’s, of which fee Lev.| xxvii. r~-8. and here the Targum calls it, the money of the redemption of fouls, which is the gift of a man for the redemption of his foul: and a// the money that cometh into any man’s heart to bring into the houfe of the Lord; vows and free-will offerings made of their own accord.
y. 8. And the priefs confented to receive no more money of the people, &c.| And delivered up. what they-had: neither to repair the breaches of the oufe; being very willing to be quit of both fervices, ahd efpecially fince they feemed to be fufpected.

But Feboiada the prief took a chef, &c.] By the commandment of the king, 2 Chron. xxiv. 8. to put the money collected into, to prevent any fraud, or fufpicion of any: and bored a bole in the /d of it; to’ drop the money into, by which means it could not be taken out without taking off the lid: and fet it befide the altar; the altar of burntoffering, in the court: on the right fide, as.one cometh into the houfe of the Lord; that is, on the north; for the entrance into the temple was at the eaft: in 2 Chron. xxiv. 8. it is faid to be fet withthat!out at the gate of the boufé,; which Dr. Lightfoot * thinks refpects another time, and that either another cheft was made; or the fame that was firft placed by the altar, in the court of the priefts, and o in‘their hands, and the money not coming in apace, was removed without the. court at the entrance of it, whither the people brought it readily: and the priefls that kept the door; the door of the outward court, the Levites, the porters, or rather, as the Targum, the priefts, the treafurers, who were appointed to this fervice in the room of the ofjothers difmified; and fo Kimchi and other Fewi/h commentators interpret this of the keepers of the affigned vefiels of the fanctuary, and not of thedoors of it: thele put therein all the money that was brought into the houfe of the Lord; by the people from the feveral parts of the country, who by proclamation were required fo to do, and very readily did, 2 Chron, xxiv. g, 10.
y.10. dud it was fo, when they faw that there was much money in the cheft, &c.] Which might \eafily be guefled at by the number of the people which contributed: that the king’s firibe, and the high prieft came up; to the temple; the high prieft did not chufe to come alone, left he fhould be fufpected, but to have the king’s fecretary with him, that the money might be taken out of the cheft,, and told in the pretence of them both: in 2 Chron. xxiv. 11. inftead of the high i is the high prieft’s officer, which the Zargu ere calls the Sagan of the high prieft, or his deputy, who perhaps attended when the high prieft could not: and they put up in bags, and told the money that was found in the boufe of the Lord; that is, they poured _ the money out of the cheft, or emptied it, as in réfed:; 2 Chron. xxiv. 11. and told it, and very likely fet y.7. Then king Feboafh called for Fehoiada the prich, and the other pricfs, &c.) The common priefts, Feboiada being high-prieft: and Jaid unto them, why repair ye not the breaches of the boufe? in which they appeared to him very dilatory; the reafon might be, the people were not forward y in their money, and they might not chufe to gin’ the repairs until they had got it all in, or 1 Seder Olam Rabba, c. 18.

from any concern in the repairs: this mdhey told, Kimchi interprets of its being coined; he fuppofes money coined and uncoined to be brought, which was put in feparate bags; and that which was not coined, they coined it “before they delivered it to the overfeers to pay the workmen with:

And to 7 mafons, and bewers of fone, &c.} Which they cut out of the mountain, and the mafons repaired the ftone walls with: and to buy timber; felled in Lebanon: building with: the Lord; whére both timber and ftone were wanting: and for all that was laid out for the boufe to repair it;; in whatfoever elfe it needed, as iron and)

Howbeit, there were not made for the houfe of the Lord, bowls of filver, &c.] Either to hold the blood of the facrifices, or the drink-offerings of wine: /uuffers; to trim the lamps with; or, as Farchi and other writers, both ‘fewi/b and chriftian, mufical inftruments: da/ons; vefiels to fprinkle the blood with, as the word fignifies: trumpets, filver ones, to call the affembly, blow over the facrifices, &c. any veffels of gold, or veffels of filver; for any other ufe: thefe were nct made of the money that was brought into the boufe of the Lord; yet, in in 2 Chron. xxiv. 14. it is faid they were, which is to be reconciled thus; they did not make any of thofe things at firft, until the houfe was repaired, and the charges of it defrayed; and then of what remained they made vefiels for the houfe, which were wanting, that 4baliab had _ beftowed on Baalim, 2 Chron. xxiv. 7.
y¥. 14. But they gave that to the workmen, and repaired therewith the boufé of the Lord.] They
took care that the workmen fhould firft be paid for the repairs of the temple.
¥.15. Moreover, they reckoned not with the men} into whofe hand they delivered the money to be be- Stowed on the workmen, &c.| That is, the king’s fecretary and the high prieft, or his officer, never called to account the overfeers of the workmen, to whom they committed the money to pay them with; never examined how they laid it out, and for what: for they dealt faithfully; they faw they acted fuch an honeft and upright part, and fuch an high opinion had they of them, that they nevér examined their accounts, or called for their bills.

The trefpa/s-money, and fin-money was not brought into the houfe of the Lord, &c.] Which was the money perfons at a diftance fent for their trefpafs and fin-offerings inftead of cattle, with which the facrifices were bought; and what remained of the money was not brought into the temple, and made ufe of in the above manner: it was the priefis; the overplus of it, and fuch of the ee which by the law were appropriated to them
