And Febu the fon of Hanani the feer, &c.] The fon of him that reproved 4a, for which he put him in prifon, ch. xvi. 7, 10. but that did not deter this his fon from reproving Febofbaphat: went out to meet him, as he was returning: and /aid to hing Febofhaphat, /houldeft thou help the ungodly; fuch an one as Ahad, an idolater, murderer and perfecutor: and love them that bate the Lord? his laws,worthip and ordinances, as he had; intimating, and genuine, from whence fprung many good works done by him: in that thou baft taken away the groves out of the land; cut down the groves of trees, and deftroyed the idols and images in them: and to feek God; through the grace of God his heart was difpofed to ferve and worfhip the Lord, and to feek his honour and glory. { y.4. And Febofhaphat dwelt at Ferufalem, Bec. and Levites: from Beerfoeba to mount Epbraim; Beerfoeba was the fouthern boundary of the land of ‘Yudab, and mount Ephraim lay to the north, and was the northern boundary of it fince the divifion of the kingdom: and brought them back to the Lord God of their fathers, from idolatry to the “pure worfhip of God, fuch who had relapfed fince the Arft reformation, or had not been influenced to Ferufalem, that is; this court was fet up at Jerifalem, when Febofoaphat, the priefts, Levites, and chief men that went with him returned thither.

¥. 9. And he charged them, &c.] The members of the court at Yerufalem: faying, thus hall ye do in the fear of the Lord, faithfully, and with a perfec heart, judge righteoufly and impartially, as men fearing God, true to the truft repofed in them, and fincere and upright in heart and actions,

And be fet judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Fudab, city by city, &c. having nothing elfe in view but the glory of God, Inferior judges in leffer courts of judicature than that at Ferufalem, and that in every city, that judgment and juftice might be executed every where; fuch were appointed by David, but had been neglected, and now reftored, fee 1 Chron. xxvi. 29, 32. ¥. 6. And faid to the judges, take heed what you do, &c.] In judgment, that they judged righteous judgment according to the law of God, without partiality and refpect of perfons: for ye judge not ‘for man, but for the Lord; not for man only, but for the Lord; and not fo much for man, as for the Lord, whom they reprefented in judgment; whofe law was the rule of their judgment, and whofe glory their end, and to whom they were accountable: whois with you in the judgment, as to guide and direét you, fo to obferve how they behaved, and be a witnefs for or againft them; the Zargum is, “* ye judge not before men, but before the Word of the Lord, whofe Shekinah dwells with you in the affair of judgment.” ¥. 7. Wherefore now, let the fear of the Lord be upon you, &c.] And act as having that before your eyes, and on your hearts: take heed and do it; do the commands enjoined them by him, and do judgment according to the Jaw of God: /or there is no iniquity with the Lord our God; none in his nature, nor in his law; none commanded nor approved of by him, and therefore none fhould be done by his reprefentatives in judgment: or refped o perfons: whether high or low, rich or poor: nor taking of gifts; he accepts not the faces of men, nor receives bribes, nor fhould his judges; this is forbidden by him, Deut. xvi. 19.

¥. 8. Moreover, in ferufalem did Febofhaphat fet of the Levites, and of the pricfts, and of the chie of the fathers of Ifracl, &c.] This was the great court of judicature, confifting of princes, priefts, and Levites, of ecclefiafticks and political perfons; for caufes of both forts were brought thither: for the judgment of the Lord, in things facred, which

¥.10. And what caufe foever fhall come unto you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, &c. Whether facred or civil, that fhould come before them by way of appeal from inferior courts in the country, where they could not be determined: detween blood and blood; one relation and another, or with refpect to fhedding of blood, whether ignorantly or purpofely: detween law and commandment, ftatutes and judgments; not rightly underftood, and fo pleaded on both fides: ye /hall even warn them that they trefpa/s not againft the Lord; the perfons engaged in controverfy, that they take no falfe oath, nor bear falfe teftimony, and aét not ftubbornly again{t any of the laws, when explained in court unto them: and fo’wrath come upon yot, and your children; upon judges for the neglect of their duty in giving due warning, and upon the people for not taking it when given: this do, and ye fhall not ¢re/pa/s; if the above charge in all its parts is ftrictly attended to.

¥. 11. And bebold, Amariah the chief-prieft is over you in all matters of the Lord, &c.] He being high-prieft, prefided in this court in all things facred, or which refpected the worfhip of \God; and was prefent to give his advice, and direct in the determination of all fuch matters that fhould come before them, according to the laws and ftatutes provided in fuch cafes; though it may be he was only a common prieft, that was chief over them, or the prefident of this court: amd Zebadiah the fon of Ibmael, the ruler of the boufe of Fudab, the prince of the tribe of Fudab: for all the king’s matters; fuch as related to civil government, and which were not fo clearly determined by pofitive laws: al/o the Levites fhall be officers before you; to execute the fentences that fhould be pafled by them: deal courageoufly; fear not the faces of any, but judge righteoufly and faithfully: and the Lord fhall be with the good, with good men that do good, to beftow all needful good related to the worfhip of God, and the fupport it: and for controverfies; of a civil kind between man and man, whether pecuniary or capital, of offupon them, to protect and defend them; the Targum is, ‘* the Word of the Lord fhall be for your help, who is good.”

It came to pafs after this alfo, &c.] After Fehofbaphai’s return from Ramoth-gilead, and putting the civil and religious affairs of his people on a better footing, when he might have expected much peace and profperity: that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon; both the defcen- - dants of Lot, fee Pf. \xxxiii. 8. and with them other defides the Ammonites; a great company of Arabians, according to Fofephus'; or with the Meamonites, which the Targum underftands of the Idumeans or Edomites; and fo do other interpreters, and which they conclude from ¥.10, 22, 2 3 Yarchi thinks the Amalekites are meant, who wete of the race of Edom; but the notion of Kiimchi feems beft, that thefe are the people that are fo called from the name of a place Meon, and by an Gnverfion of letters, the fame with the Meunim or “Maonites, mentioned along with the Zidonians and Amalekites, Fudg. X.12. and whom the Septuagint verfion here calls Mineans; fome ‘take them to be fuch who counterfeited the Ammonites in their ap- ‘parel and geftures: thefe came againjt Feb ofpaphat in battles being inftigated perhaps by the Syrians, who owed him ill-will for affifting 4bab againft\ them at Ramath-gilead, for from that quarter they came, as the following verfe fhews.

Then there came fome that told Fehofbaphat, ‘&c.] Deferters or fpies, or fome of the inhabitants of thofe parts where they had entered, who rode poft hafte to acquaint him with it: /aying, there cometh a great multitude cgainft thee from yond the fea on this fide Syria, that is, beyond Dead or Salt-fea, the fea of Sodom; the Targum is, ** beyond the welt of “yria,” that fea being the weftern boundary of it: and Lebold, they be in Ha- Zazon-tamar, which is Engedi;

¥. 3. And Febofbaphat feared, &c.] Excecdingly, as the Targum adds, not merely becaufe of the ber of his enemies, for he had forces enough to forth againft them, fee ch. xvii. 14—19. chiefly becaufe the Lord had told him that wrath was upon him from him, ch. xix. 2.

And Fudah gathered themfelves together tojof afk help of the Lord, &c.] To implore his ‘fiftanée againft their enemies, and his protection of them; ‘and they met not in their feveral cities, at Ferufalem, as appears by what follows: even outi of all the cities of Fudab, they came to feek the Lord; at the templé, where was the ark, the fymbol of. +9. And now behold, the children of Ammon, a@ Moab, and mount Seir, whom thou wouldef not let Ifvael invade, when they came out of the land Egypt, &c.| Charging them not to meddi¢ af-jwith them, nor take any of their lands from them; Dept. ii. 5,9, 19. dut they turned from them, and but defroyed them not; in obedience to the divine command, when it was in their powet to have done it. -

¥. 11. Behold, I fay, how they reward us, &e,] Evil for good: to come to caft us out of thy | Pe his prefence. ion, which thou baft given us to inberit, the land y¥.. And Febofbaphat flood in the congregation of udah and Ferufatem, in the houfe of the Lord, &c. In the temple, in the court of the people, where the inhabitants of Yudab and Ferufelem were affem- ‘bled, in the midft of which he ftood very probably on the brazen fcaffold erected by Solomon, vi. 13. before the new court; which muft be the court of the priefts, for he ftood in the great court, or court of the people, and before this, which might be fo called, becaufe’ renewed or repaired when the altar was by A/a, ch. xv. 8. Dr. foot * thinks, it was the court of the women.; but it is a queftion whether there was any fuch court in the firft temple; or that the great court was then divided into two, one for the men, the other for of Canaan was their inheritance, ah inheritance \given them by God, their Covenant-God and Father, who had a right to dilpofe of it, and yet fo given, that it was {till his pofleffion, he was the lord and proprietor, they but tenants under him; ch.jall which, as they were fo many aggravations of — the guilt of their enemies, fo they Gere fe many arguments with the Lord to protect them.

And.all Fudah food before the Lord, &c.] Looking towards the moft holy place, where the ark of his prefence was, in a humble and fubmif- need to ftrike a ftroke: and fee the falvation of the Lord with you; which he would work for them, fee Exod. xiv. 13. and Fudah and Ferujalem, fear not, nor be difmayed; which is repeated for the confirmation of them: to-morrow go out againft them, for the Lord will be with you; to protect them, fight for them, and give them victory; the Targum is, “* the Word of the Lord fhall be five pofture; waiting what would be the iffue of your help.”

¥. 19. And the Levites; of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korbites, &c.} Who were of the pofterity of Kobath, in the line Korah: ftood up to praife the Lord God of Ifrael with a loud voice on high; in high notes; they being the courfe in turn at this time for this fervice.

¥.14. Then upon Fabaziel, the fon of Zechariah, ihe fon of Benaiah, the fon of Febiel, the fon of Mattaniab, a Levite, of the fons of dfapb, &c.] Being a man of fome note, though a Levite, his genealogy is given: came the Spirit of the Lord in the midji of the congregation; the fpirit of prophecy from the Lord, as the Targum, as it was; for he foretold the victory that fhould be obtained over the enemy, and that without fighting, yea, the particular place where they fhould meet them; and this came upon him fuddenly, whilft he was in the midft of the congregation, whilft he and they were waiting upon the Lord, and perhaps had never prophefied before; or if he had; did not come according to the will of man, but by the will of God; the Spirit of God in that,.as in other inftances, is like the wind that blows when and where it lifteth. you be eftablifbed;

y.20. And they rofe early in the morning, &c.] Being confident of fuccefs, animated by what the prophet faid to them: and went forth into the wilderne/s of Tekoa; which, according to Ferom “, was fix miles from Bethlehem, and nine from Fers- /a/em, fome fay twelve, beyond which was nothing but a defert; it was part of the wildernefs of Fudab: and as they went forth; out of Ferufalem, through one of the gates of it: Febofbaphat ftood prophecy and Jaid, believe in the Lord your God; in the promifes he had made, particularly wich refpect to the victory over their prefent enemies; the Targum is, ‘‘ in the Word of the Lord your God:” /o hail have courage and firmneis of mind, as well as be fafe and fecure: believe his prophets; fent by him, and that {peak in his name, particularly fabaziel, who had predicted victory to them: fo shall ye profper; things will fucceed to your wifhes, and beyond your expectations.

And he faid, bearken ye, all Fudab, and ye inhabitants of Ferufalem, and thou king Febofbaphat, &c.|) There is a climax or gradation in thefe words rifing from the loweft to the higheft; from the people of the cities in the country, to the inhabitants of Ferufalem the metropolis, and from thence to the king the fupreme governor: ¢hus faith the Lord unto you, be not afraid, nor difmayed, by reafon of this great multitude, whofe numbers were difcouraging to the king, and he had taken notice of them, which this refpects: for the battle is not yours, but God’s;

y.21. And when he had confulted with the people, &c.] His principal officers, in what order they fhould march, and in what manner they fhould form themfelves, when they met the enemy, and how they fhould conduct as if they were to engage: he appointed fingers unto the Lord; to fing the caufe was his, and hejhis praife, and give him glory, as if the victory was already completed, it being fo fure: aud. that /bould praife the beauty of bolinefs, as they went out thing to fear. ’ before the army, that is, praife God who is glo-

To-morrow go ye down againft them, &c.} This was the faft-day, and fo not proper to march out in, but on the morrow they might go out| with great confidence and intrepidity; and as Yerufalem was fituated on an eminence, they are direéted to go down: Lebold, they come up by the cliff Ziz; a fteep hill, fo called from the flowers upon it: and ye foall find them at the end of the brook; on the bank of Kidron, according to Beckius, which feems not likely to be meant, fince they went as far as the wildernefs of Tekoa, ¥. 20. before the rious in holinefs, whofe beauty lies in his holinets, and who is holy in all his ways and works; and to ay, praife the Lord, for bis mercy endureth for ever; with which they were to conclude their fongs of praife, as David did, and whofe fongs they might of fing, fee P/. cxxxvi.

And when they began to fing and to praife, &c.] ‘They fung more or lefs all the way they went, from the time they fet out, but when they came nearer the enemy, they fung louder and louder: the Lord fet ambufhments againft the chil- wilderne/s of Feruel; the fame with that of Tekoa, or near it. y.17. Ye foall not need to fight in this battle, dren of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which came againft Fudab, fome take them to be their own ambufhments, which they fet for the deftruction of

&c.] Since the Lord would fight for them: /et yourfelves, fiand ye ftill; prefent themfelves they might, as if ready to engage; and keep their ground, not giving way in the leaft, but would have 7udeb; but the Lord turned them againft their own confederates, miftaking them for ews; fo the Vulgate Latin verfion, ** the Lord turned their nojambufhments againft themfelves; or rather thefe were angels, who appeared in the form of the came to the city, and entered it, and paffec Edomites, and fo fell upon the Ammonites and Mo-jit: unto the houfe of the Lord; the tem| many oOf|to offer praife and thankfgiving again.

Seir; fo that there were none left of them: every one helped to deftroy one another; in their confufion miftook one another, either for Edomites or Fews, like the Midianites in the times of Gideon. ¥.24. When ‘fudab came towards the watchtower in the wildernefs, &c.| Which might ftand upon the hill or cliff of Ziz, for the fake of the direction of travellers, and the prefervation of them from thieves and robbers: they looked unto the multitude; which they could take a view of from the top of the hill: and bebold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none efcaped; all to a man flain, there was not one to be feen ftanding on his feet. ¥.25. And when Febofoapbat and bis people came to take the fpoil of them, &c.] Which was all they the times of Sebofbapbat. Ge FO ts ¥. 30. So the realm of Fehofhaphat was guiet, &c.} Both within and without; they were at peace

¥. 33. Howbeit, the high places were not taken had to do; they had no need to fight, as they were, told, the Lord had fought for them: ‘shey found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies; rich garments on them, and gold and filver on them; and precious jewels, which they ftript off for themfelves; with which their clothes, or thofe where facrifices were offered to the true God: * for as yet the people.had not prepared their bearis unto the God of their fathers, to feek and ferve him wholly, according to his will, to offer facrifices to him only at erufalem, as the law required, Dew¢. xii. 5, 6, 7. they could not as yet fome part of their bodies were ornamented: more than they could carry away; they were fo many, that they made too great a burden for them: and they were three days in gathering of the fpoil, it was fo much; it took up fo much time to ftrip the bodies, to fearch for their money and jewels, rings, chains, and fuch like things of value, worn by

And on the fourth day they affembled themfelves in the valley of Berachab, &c.| As it was afterwards called from what they did there, as follows, which was the reafon of its name: for there they bleffed the Lord; returned thanks to him for this wonderful appearance on their behalf, and gave him the glory of it; no doubt but they had given vailed upon. to relinquifh the high places, and made ufe of before the temple was; partly becaufe they were nearer to fome of them than that, and partly out of veneration for them, as being of a long time ufed. stay

¥. 34. Now the reft of the aéts of Sebofbaphat, firft and laft, &c.) Thofe that were done at the beginning, and thofe that were done at the latter end of his reion: debold, they are written jn the book of Febu, the fon of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Ifrael; fee 1 Kings xvi.’ 1, 7. the fame that reproved Jebofbaphat, ch. xix. 2. He wrote a book of his own times, and whichwas fo much efteemed, according to Kimchi, that it was written with, ‘or put along with the book of him praife before in fome fort and manner, but now in a fet, folemn and public manner, with one heart and voice they united in afcribing honour, bleffing, and glory to him: therefore rhe name of the fame place was called the valley of Berachah, unto this day; the valley of Blefing, this name it bore in the times of Ezra, the writer of this book, even after the ews returned from the Badylonifh captivity 5 it is thought to be the fame that is called by Ferom ” Cepharbarucha, which he fpeaks of as not| far from Engedi, fee y. 2. others, will have it to be the fame with the valley of Fehofbapbat, but not fo likely, that feems to be nearer Feru/alem.

¥.27. Then they returned every man of Fudak and of Ferufalem, and Febofoaphat at the fore-front of them, to go again to ferufalem with joy, &c.| There to_praife the Lord in the temple, as they had done in the valley: for the Lord bad made them to rejoice over their enemies; by giving them a compleat the kings of U/rae/, for fo he interprets the phrafe; but the Zargum underitands it of Jeba, being the king’s Aifforiographer, who had the care and overfight of the diary, journal, or annals of the kings ot Irael. ¥ y. 35. And after this did Feboaphat king of Judah join himfelf with Abaziah king Irae, Bec.
