That is, was a fon of Feconiah as well as Salathiel, and fo the refi that follow: and Pedaiah, and Shenazar, Fecamiah, ie this chapter is a farther account of the tribe of Fudab, and of fome principal families in it, y. 1—23. and of the tribe of Simeon, their famifies, cities and villages, ¥. 24—-38. and of the en- Jargement of their borders, and conqueft of the Amalekites, ¥. 39—43.

Zerubbabel being his grandfon, may. be call fon, as grandfons are fometimes called fons. it feripture; or rather, Salatbiel, having no children, adopted Zerubbadel, his brother’s fon, and made him fucceffor in the government;, fo that he was. the fon of Pedaiah by birth, and of Salathiel by” doption; or elfe Salathiel dying without children, his brother Pedaiab, according to the law, marri his widow, and by her had Zerubbabel, who w the proper fon of Pedaiah, and the legal fon~ Salathiel; and the fons of Zerubbabel; Mefoallam who is called Abiud, Matt. i. £3. another his, with their father, is mentioned in this verfe,-. and five more inthe next. From hence to the end of. the chapter, the genealogy is carried on from the captivity of Babylon, out of which Zerubbabel came, to the coming of Chrift; and if Hera was the writer of this. book, as is generally thought, who was cotemporary with Zerubbabel, this account muft be written by another hand: and it may be obferved, that it is carried on in the fame number of generations as in Matthew; and here it ftands thus: Zerubbabel, Hananiah, Fefaiab, Rephaiab, Arnan, Obadiah, Shecaniah, Shemaiah, MNeariab, Elicenai, Anani; in Matthew’ thus, Zerubbabel Abiud, Eliakim, Azor, Sadoc, Achim, Eliud, Eleazar,' Matthan, Facob, Fofeph; the difference in names may be accounted for by their having two names; and,it is remarkable that the Targum makes Anani to be the king Mefiah, who was to be revealed; which, though it makes one generation lef to his time, yet plainly fhews that the Fews expected the Meffiah to come at the end of this genealogy, and about the time Ye/us the true Mefliah did. Asani is reckoned by other Jews.a name of the Meffiah, who. is faid’ to come in the clouds of heaven, which Avani fignifies, Dan vii.

y.9. And Fabez was more honourable than his brethren, &c.} The Targum adds, ‘‘ and wifer in the law than his brethren;” or he might be a man of great wealth and riches, or of great. ftrength and courage, all which make a man honourable; or he may be fo called, becaufe a praying man, as follows, a man of devotion and religion, a man of God, fee 1 Sam. ix. 6. but who he was is not eafy to fay, probably a fon or brother of Harum, or however that belonged to one of the families of Abarhbel, mentioned in the preceding verle; for that he was Othniel, as fay the Targumif? and other Fewifh writers*, is not probable, and befides is after fpoken of diftinét from him, y. 13. and bis mother called bis name ‘fabez, faying, becaufe I bare him with forrow; either with forrow for her hufband, being dead, or by reaforof very tharp pains fhe endured at the birth of him; he was anothér Benoni.

And the fons of his wife Hediah, &c. ] Another wife of Mered. Hillerus* takes her to be the fame with Febudijah, ¥. 18. though fome * take Hodiah to be the name of a man, and read the words, and the fons of the wife of Hodiah; which wife of Hodiah was the fifter of Nabam; or rather Achstnaham we render the fifter of Naham, is the name of the firft fon of Hodiah, as fome think *:

the father of Keilab the Garmite, prince of the city of Keilah, in the tribe of Fudab, ‘fob. xv. 44. who {prune from the family of Garmi: and Efhtemoa the Maacbathite, the father or prince of the inhabitants of E/btemoa, another city in the fame tribe, fee y.17. who fprung from Maasbha, fee ch. ii.

¥. 22. And Fokim,&c.] The Vulgate Latin verfion is, and be that made the fun to fland; as it JFofoua was meant; and in the Talmud it is ® faid YFokim, this is Fofbua, who confirmed the oath to the Gibeonites; and the Targum here is, ‘* and the prophets of the fcribes that fprang from the po- {terity of Fofbua;” but Fofhua was of the tribe of Ephraim, and not of Fudab; though fome interpret it of Elimelech, as Lyra obferves*, of whom the fable is, that the fun ftood {till at his prayers, as it did in Yo/bua’s time, to convert the men.of Bethlehem, but Fokim is no doubt the proper name of fome famous man or family that defcended from Shelah: and the men of Chozeba; which fignifies a lye; andthe Targum interprets it of the Gideonites, who lied to Fo/bua; but thole were Canaanites, and not of the pofterity of Shelab, and tribe of Fudabh, Chezib or Achzib, a city in the tribe of Judab, very probably is meant, as Kimebi, the very place where Shelab was born, Gen. xxxviii, 5, and - where dwelt fome of his pofterity: and Foalb and Saraph, who had the dominion in Moab; fome render the word, which married in Moab; and fo the Targum interprets it of Mablon and Chilion, who took wives of the daughters of Moad; but rather it is to be underftood of fome who were governors in Moab in the times of David, when Moab was fabdued by him, 2 Sam. viii. 2. or however were fuch, who at one time or another, made war with Mad, and overcame them: and Fafhubi-lebems; which the Targumift underftands of Boaz, prince of the wife men of the fchool of Bethlebem, and the Talmudifis * of Ruth, that dwelt in Bethlehem, and may be interpreted of fome of the inhabitants of that place which fprang from Shelab; or rather is the name of a fingle man famous in his time, tho’ not now known: amd thefe are antient things, account of perfons that lived in tee Key ah which the writer of this book gives not on his own knowledge, but by tradition, or rather by i infpiration.

¥. 23. These were the potters, &c.]. Or are the potters; the pofterity of thofe men, who were, fo famous in their day, are.now of mean employments: fome of them made earthen pots; 5 and fome of them dwelt among plants and hedzes; or were employed in planting gardens and or rchards, and making fences for doers 3 OF, as other think, dwelt an Netaim and Gadara, cities in the tribe of dah:

shere they dwelt with the king for his work; to make pots, plant gardens, ‘and fet hedges for cued 3 either for the king of udab, or it may be for the king of Badylen, elete they were carried captive, and now chofe to remain, doing thofe fervile works for the king, without the city in the fields.
