Joseph Hardy Neesima
Founder of Doshisha
Known in Japan as Niijima Jō, he was smuggled out of Hakodate in 1864, when leaving Japan was punishable by death, taken in by a Boston shipowner, educated at Amherst and Andover, and went home to found the Christian school in Kyoto that became Doshisha University.
